What you can do until we arrive
These steps cost nothing and often stop a blockage from turning into water damage.
Do not add any more water
Switch off the dishwasher and the washing machine and stop using the affected drain. Every litre that goes in now has to end up somewhere.
Do not pour in chemical drain cleaners
They rarely dissolve a solid blockage. They sit on top of it instead and can attack seals and older pipes. When we open the pipe the caustic liquid comes back out at us, which makes the job more dangerous.
Avoid drains on lower floors
Water finds the lowest point. For now, stop using the shower, toilet and floor gully in the basement or lower floor, because that is where it comes back up first.
If sewage has backed up, stay out of the basement
If there is already water in the basement, do not go in. Sewage can be in contact with electricity and is a hygiene risk. Switch off the power to that part of the building if you can reach the fuse box safely.
Clear the access
Empty the cupboard under the sink and clear the manhole or inspection opening if you know where it is. That saves the most time on site.

Good to know
Why chemical drain cleaners usually make things worse
Liquid drain cleaners from the supermarket rarely dissolve a solid blockage. Instead they sit on top of it and keep working there. That can attack seals and damage older pipes.
For us the job then becomes harder and more dangerous, because the caustic liquid comes back out when we open the pipe. If you have already poured something in, please tell us on the phone. Nobody is judging you, we simply need to prepare for it.
What saves time when we arrive
Things go fastest when the way to the drain is clear. Empty the cupboard under the sink, move boxes and washing machines aside and clear the access to the inspection opening if you know where it is.
It also helps to move anything fragile out of the work area. And tell us whether the problem affects one drain or several. That is the best clue to how far back the blockage sits.
Drain spiral or high pressure water
The drain spiral works mechanically and reaches into narrow, twisting pipework. That is the typical situation in kitchens, bathrooms and the soil stacks behind them. It breaks through the blockage and gets the water running again.
High pressure jetting works with water and cleans the pipe wall along its whole length. It is the right choice for main house drains and for deposits that have built up over years. Which method fits is decided at the pipe itself.

Common questions about drain cleaning
My drain is blocked. What can I do until you arrive?
Stop using the affected drain and do not let any more water run into it. Do not pour in anything chemical. It is also best to avoid lower drains in the basement, because water backs up there first.
Who pays for drain cleaning, tenant or landlord?
That usually depends on the cause of the blockage and where it sits. A pipe that serves only one flat is judged differently from a shared pipe in the building. We are not allowed to give legal advice on this. If in doubt, ask your property manager or a tenants association.
Do I have to be there while you work?
Someone has to let us in and confirm the job. That can also be a caretaker, a neighbour or someone from the property management.
Will the blockage come back?
That depends on the cause. A single foreign object is dealt with once it is out. If grease, limescale or roots are sitting in the pipe, the problem usually returns unless something else is done. We tell you on site which case you have.
What helps against drains that are always slow?
Catch hair with a strainer and keep fat and coffee grounds out of the sink. Hot water helps against fresh grease but not against old, hardened deposits. If a drain is still permanently slow, there is usually more behind it than a blockage right at the trap.
Do you also work at night and on weekends?
Yes, we are available around the clock, on weekends and public holidays too. Call us and briefly describe what has happened.
