Why regular emptying is necessary
A sealed cesspit takes in everything that runs into it and lets nothing out. At some point it is full. If it is emptied too late it overflows. What comes out then puts soil and groundwater at risk and quickly becomes a matter for the authorities.
A small treatment plant works differently. It treats the waste water biologically, but sludge still builds up. If too much sludge sits in the plant, the treatment performance drops and the next sample comes back poor.
Who decides on the emptying
How often emptying has to happen and who orders it is not regulated the same way everywhere in Germany. The local municipality sets it out in its drainage bylaws. In some places the municipality calls in the emptying itself, in others you order it as the owner.

What we need for the visit
The vacuum truck is large and heavy. It needs an access road that can carry it and space to stand, and the suction hose has a limited length. So tell us on the phone how far the tank is from the nearest point a truck can reach.
The lid should be clear and possible to open. If it is overgrown, buried in sand or blocked by something, that costs time on site.

Common questions about cesspit and septic tank emptying
How often does my tank have to be emptied?
For a sealed cesspit that depends on its size and your water use. For a small treatment plant it depends on the sludge level. What is binding is what your municipality has set out in its bylaws and in your permit.
How do I know it is getting urgent?
Smells, slow running drains in the house and a visibly high level in the tank are clear signs. Do not wait until something overflows.
Where do the contents go?
The contents are taken away and passed to an approved disposal route. Exactly where depends on the material and on the rules for your system.
Do I have to be there for the emptying?
Not necessarily, as long as the access and the lid are freely reachable. If we have to unlock something or the route runs across your property, it is easier when someone is there.
Do you also clean sand traps and pump chambers?
Yes. Sand traps, sludge traps and pump chambers are handled with the same vehicle. Describe on the phone what you have.
Our small treatment plant got a poor sample result. Does emptying help?
Often too much sludge in the plant is the reason, in which case emptying is the sensible first step. If the result stays poor afterwards, it is down to the equipment or its settings, and then the service company for your plant is the right contact.
